This bridge over the “Nervión” River in Artunguaga, near Basauri, substitutes in a functional level an existing one upstream from its location. The project not only included the construction of the bridge, but also the roundabouts on both margins and the modification of their access roads. The bridge improves the functionality and the services of the old one, widening the platform, and creating a bidirectional bridge, with 3.50 m lanes, and 3.00 m sidewalks.
To achieve all the objectives, the total width of the bridge is 16.69 m, with 7.50 m of lanes, 3.00 m of sidewalks in both sides of the bridge, barriers, and the space between the sidewalks and the lane where the steel arches are located accompanied by the longitudinal nerves which incorporate a wooden bench for pedestrians.
The bridge spans 54.00 m with only 80 cm below the asphalt, creating a space under the bridge that allows the pedestrian traffic and creates a new walk beside the river.
The bowstring typology has been chosen for avoiding any needing of piers, creating a clean jump between both sides of the river integrated not only with the surrounding landscape, but also with the old masonry bridge.
The old bridge was rehabilitated for cycle and pedestrian use.
