Arenas & Asociados was asked by the Managing Society of PCTCAN for projecting and supervising the works of urbanization and construction of the “Science and Technology Park of Cantabria”. In this context, a new bridge was designed allowing the connection of the Park with Santander at north and with Peñacastillo at south. The bridge announces therefore the urbanization of PCTCAN and it serves as a “gate” of the Park in the access to Santander from the highway.
The bridge is an asymmetric cable stayed bridge with central plane of stays sustaining the deck and double open plane of backstays anchored in the Abutment-Counterweight. The composite deck section is 21 m wide holding two lanes by way traffic, 3.5 m wide, with its corresponding sidewalks in the outer edges.
The cross-section deck is embedded in the North abutment by means of a rigid connection to the concrete section which allows the transition to the keel shaped abutment. Finally, the steel mast leans forwards to display an inclined geometry in a gesture of progress and dynamism, pointing to the site of the Park. Its transverse section is triangular, being anchored the main stays in the frontal vertex of the mast, while the backstays extend the lateral faces of the mast. The mast has its continuity in the abutment, being aligned with the keel of the abutment.
