New “Golbardo” Bridge

DESCRIPCION

In order to improve access to the village of Golbardo from the road CN-634, the Government of Cantabria commissioned us the design of a new bridge to give access to such location.
This new bridge is truly unique, as it must be projected one hundred meters downstream from the bridge which it will replace for traffic service, an arch bridge that was designed and built by José Eugenio Ribera in 1902, which was the second reinforced concrete bridge built in Spain.
Thus, the present design should be respectful of the existing bridge, while responding to functionality, for both traffics, vehicles and pedestrians, as for the river hydraulics, which is required for the new bridge.
That is why the bridge for the Saja river crossing is designed as a raised arch with superior deck for a main span of 60 m. A laminar or flexible arch, as its depth is only 60 cm, and a height/span ratio of 1/10; a reinterpretation of Ribera’s Bridge, master among Spanish engineers.
 
The hydraulic river drain assumed that the bridge should have a total length of 210 m, so that the arch bridge had to be accompanied by an access viaduct, designed as integral pre-stressed concrete slab bridge, with a slender deck whose depth is only 90 cm thick at mid-span, growing up to 172.5 cm over the piers.
The width of the bridge deck is 11.30 m, giving service to two traffic lanes of 3.5 m and 1.65 m pedestrian sidewalks.
The piers of both the viaduct and on the arch, called pillars, consist of slender walls that filter this way the bending efforts, working therefore exclusively under axial tensions.
This new bridge, viewed from Barcenaciones and the Saja riverbanks is the perfect frame for the Ribera bridge, establishing an adequate dialogue, with a translation from the formal and structural language of the early 20th century, to the resources that nowadays are used. The absence of this dialogue would had mean a lack of understanding of our masters, including Ribera.
