“La Regenta” Arch Bridge

DESCRIPCION

This restful but impressive bridge allows the new road from Asturias to Galicia to the Cubo River deep ravine.
With a span of 190 meters, the concrete hollow-box cross-section arch supports the deck, playing the role of solid ground.
The construction procedure was based on cantilevering of the arch, the steel deck and the vertical piers, combined with provisional diagonal double T shaped steel profile ties, for which new hydraulic jacks were designed in order to be able to adjust their tension in every stage of construction.
The last step of the construction procedure consisted in the introduction of the horizontal thrust between both half-arches by means of hydraulic devices and the progressive operations of loosening and dismounting the provisional ties.
In its final situation, the arch conveys a deep feeling of quietness and safety, derived without any doubt from its mass and shape and from the natural resistant mechanism that a vault composes. And, as engineers, we know that the permanent compressive state of stress associated with this mechanism stands for durability, a value of the highest social importance in great public works.
