Bridge in Palomar over Nalón River

DESCRIPCION

In the Oviedo Water Supply Improvement project, the construction of a new supply system was planned. The outline of this element implied the crossing of the River Nalón, in the surroundings of Palomar.
The bridge was designed not only for sustaining the new drinking water supply system, but also for creating a new communication channel between the existing villages in both sides of the river. So it was projected a composite section bridge with a straight lintel in both sides with a total length of 136.5 m between abutments.
The Palomar Bridge has a total width of 12.7m, 7 of which are used in a road with two lanes of 3 m.
The rest of the platform is used as two sidewalks 2.25 m width down of which are located the water supply system.

The structural typology is a continuous girder with two spans with a distribution 70+66.5 m, overcrossing the river with only one span and eliminating piles in the flood zone. The spans adopted create from our point of view to a clean solution with pure harmony in its forms.
The transversal section is thought to host the supply system so that it could be accessible for repairing or replacing it. It consist in a hollowed steel box 6.1 m width with inclined webs. Those webs are braced between them with diaphragms spaced in every 3.5 m. The supply system is out of the bridge indeed, and lies over a "ribs" which arise from the diaphragms. The sidewalks are materialized with precast elements which can be removed with simple elevation systems.
The supports of the pipes in the ribs is done with neoprene systems dimensioned for absorbing the predictable movements derived from a thermal difference between the pipes and the deck.
Finally, the deck lies over a central pile with an octagonal section 5.5 m high, founded with six piers 1.25 m diameter.
